CA Microenterprise Home Kitchens (AB626)

California Assembly Bill 626 (AB626), known as the Homemade Food Act, was signed into law by California Governor Brown on Sept 18, 2018, and went into effect on  January 1, 2019. The legislation allows independent cooks to start small cooking operations from their home kitchens, in a licensed and permitted way.

AB 626 highlights:

  • Microenterprise Home Kitchen Operators can earn up to $50,000 in revenue per year cooking from their home kitchen
  • Meal sales are capped at 30 meals per day or  60 meals per week
  • Home cooks must obtain a California Food Handler Card (online training & test)
  • Kitchens must pass an on-site inspection by the health department in order to be permitted

However, microenterprise home kitchens are not allowed in many cities and counties. Check with your local government for more information.

We also offer the required training for CA Cottage Food Operators (CFOs). For more information: CA Cottage Food Operations
